Program Director
James Chan, MD, PhD, RDMS, FACEP
Dr. Chan was a founding faculty member of the Mercy Health – St. Rita's Emergency Medicine Residency Program. He has served as Associate Program Director since 2019, contributing in multiple roles including chair of the Clinical Competency Committee and Ultrasound Director. Dr. Chan is passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration in research, simulation, and didactic education. His research interests span resident education, diagnostic ultrasound, addiction medicine, and artificial intelligence. He is a national plenary speaker and an Advanced Trauma and Life Support course instructor. In 2024, Dr. Chan earned board certification in Addiction Medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He currently serves as an Advanced Research Methodology and Design Fellow with the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.
As a former engineer in Silicon Valley, Dr. Chan spent time honing his problem-solving skills, which translated successfully to his career in academic and community emergency medicine. He has also served as facility medical director in multiple Ohio hospitals, achieving excellent metrics, clinical engagement, and patient satisfaction.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Chan enjoys spending time with his family, attending sporting events and cheering on his favorite teams, and traveling internationally to learn about other cultures.
